Why Does Destiny Church Have Elders and How Does God Use Them?

“Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.” -James 5:14

Unfortunately, in many churches today sick believers can not avail themselves of this Scripture because there are no Elders in their church. Every New Testament church needs Elders. That is the biblical pattern.

“And when they had come to Jerusalem, they were received by the church and the apostles and the elders; and they reported all things that God had done with them.”-Acts 15:4

“So when they had appointed elders in every church, and prayed with fasting, they commended them to the Lord in whom they had believed.” -Acts 14:23

“From Miletus he sent to Ephesus and called for the elders of the church.” -Acts 20:17

“Let the elders who rule well be counted worthy of double honor, especially those who labor in the word and doctrine.” -1 Timothy 5:17

The Jerusalem church, led by men and trained by Jesus Himself, had elders (note the plural). The apostle Paul made sure that the churches he established were left under the spiritual oversight of local church elders. Pastor Timothy in Ephesus (1 Timothy 5:17) had elders helping him “direct the affairs of the church.”

The New Testament pattern is a plurality of elders in each local church. This eldership is the broad-based spiritual leadership of that church. From among those elders, one specific man will be the primary leader (generally called “pastor”) of that church.

For example:
• Timothy in Ephesus (1 & 2 Timothy)
• Titus in Crete (Titus 1:5)
• James in Jerusalem (Acts 12:17; 15:13; also Galatians 2:12).

One primary church leader and elders (plural), working with him in the spiritual oversight of the church. That is the consistent pattern. Having established the biblical principle of church elders, let us now examine in depth the ministry of elders — that is, the “job description” of the church elder.

Elders shepherd the church. Acts 20:17, 28. From Miletus, Paul sent to Ephesus for the elders of the church. Verse 28: “Therefore take heed to yourselves and to all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood.”

“The elders who are among you I exhort, I who am a fellow elder and a witness of the sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that will be revealed:

Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, serving as overseers,” -1 Peter 5:1-2

Verse 2 in the Amplified version of the Bible reads: Tend-nurture, guard, guide, fold—the flock.

Church elders are shepherds; they are feeders of the flock; they “tend” the people of God and watch over their well-being, as a natural shepherd does for his flocks.

Summary of the Elderʼs Ministry:

• They Shepherd Godʼs flock.
• They Oversee the flock.
• They Share the burden with the pastor of the church.
• They Exercise hospitality.
• They Take heed to their own walk.
• They are to be a good example.
• They are to be watchful.
• They are to safeguard good doctrine.
• They must be apt to teach.
• They lay on hands as part of the churchʼs governing body.
• They Work hard at their duties, serving God and man.
